With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.

Rightful liberty is unobstructed action according to our will within limits drawn around us by the equal rights of others. I do not add "within the limits of the law," because law is often but the tyrant's will, and always so when it violates the rights of the individual.

What county can preserve its liberties, if its rulers are not warned from time to time that its people preserve the spirit of resistance.

The only security of all is in a free press. The force of public opinion cannot be resisted when permitted freely to be expressed. The agitation it produces must be submitted to. It is necessary, to keep the waters pure.

Those willing to give up a little liberty for a little security deserve neither security nor liberty.
